Cut bustamite gems may be mistakenly labeled as rhodonites. They are similar in appearance but are paler in color. The lower refractive indices (RIs) of bustamite, on the other hand, should be diagnostic. Cut pyroxmangite gems have a rhodonite-like appearance. Their birefringence values, however, differ. Fowlerite is a zinc-bearing rhodonite variant. Chatoyancy has been seen in several Brazilian rhodonites. Rhodonites have been produced for a variety of tasks, including thermoluminescence research. Jewelry pieces containing so-called "synthetic rhodonites" are available for purchase. Rather than transparent faceted diamonds, these most commonly appear as opaque pink to rose red beads with unique dendritic black veins. (Anecdotally, some of this material has white bands that are more rhodochrosite-like.) Maybe they're mislabeled.)
