The apatite mineral group can be found in substantial quantities worldwide. The majority of bones and teeth are made up of a type of mineral known as hydroxylapatite. Apatite serves as the most abundant phosphorus-bearing mineral. It can also be found in cellophane, a substantial cryptocrystalline variation that can be found in some locations as enormous beds.
The mineral apatite can be found in many different kinds of rocks. Igneous rocks are typically distinguished by F and OH variations; some contain manganese. Pegmatites, hydrothermal veins and cavities, metamorphic rocks, sedimentary rocks, and phosphate beds can all have apatite as detrital grains. Apatite can also be found in hydrothermal veins and cavities.
Most of the fluorapatite variants of apatite are the gemstones sold under the apatite trade name. Other apatites with the potential to be cut and polished into gems include the hydroxylapatite that was just described, as well as carbonate-rich apatite, mimetite, moroxite, vanadinite, wilkeite, and the highly uncommon chlorapatite.
